REPORT

OF THE

POLICE SURGEON

FOR THE

Fiscal Year Ending February 28th, 1894.

To the Honorable Board of Police Commissioners:

GENTLEMEN – I have the honor to present my annual report as Surgeon of Police for the year ending February 28th, 1894, as follows:
Three applicants only were examined for the force during the year. These were found to be physically qualified for appointment in accordance with instructions as laid down in the Police Manual governing medical examination.
Great care is at all times exercised in conducting the examinations, and in doing so every consideration must of necessity be waived other than that looking only to the applicant’s physical qualifications and fitness for the proper performance of the arduous and exacting duties required.
Your Surgeon has frequently been called, both by day and at night, to visit and report upon the sick and injured members of the force; also to attend such prisoners brought in to either station and requiring aid.

(199)

200
REPORT OF POLICE SURGEON.

The table below sets forth the diseases, accidents, &c, and number of cases of each treated, occurring on the force during the year:

No deaths have occurred on the force during the year.
In April and December last year, and January of present year, the force suffered very much from the epidemic of “La Grippe,” then prevailing in this vicinity.
At this time more than one-half the force (forty-one members) were attacked with the disease, but fortunately none of them was subsequently incapacitated for active duty as the result of illness from that cause. Aside from this the general health of the force throughout the year has been good.
The beneficial results of shorter hours for patrol duty on the

health and bearing of the men, alluded to in the last report, has been equally apparent in the past.
Four hundred and fifty visits were made to the sick and injured members of the force during the year, and eighty-nine day and night visits to the respective stations, on special call, to attend prisoners and others found ill and brought in off the street.
In closing I desire to thank the department in general for the courtesies and aid extended to me in the performance of duty.

            Respectfully submitted,
                        WM. B. VAN DUYN,
                                Police Surgeon.
